I want to start with something I hear from almost every store owner I talk to right now.

“Sales are coming in. I just feel like I’m working twice as hard for the same result.”

If that’s you, I need you to hear this clearly. It is not a you problem.

I was at a conference last week talking to retailers from all over the country, and the story was the same everywhere. Customers are showing up. Nothing is really on fire. And yet everyone feels like each sale takes a little more effort than it used to. That gap between “sales are fine” and “this feels harder than it should” is what I want to unpack today, along with three specific things you can do about it before fall inventory starts showing up at your back door.

What’s Actually Happening in Retail Right Now

The lesson: You’re not imagining it. Shoppers are watching prices from one side while your costs nudge up from the other. That’s Q3, and it’s why every sale takes more work right now.

Your Margins Need Attention Before Fall Gets Here

Picture two stores. Same category, same town, roughly the same traffic. One owner checks her initial markup every quarter. The other buys what sells and never checks if it’s actually profitable. By the end of the quarter, those two stores post very different results.

Take this action: Pull your top 20 bestsellers and check the markup on every single one. If you haven’t started your summer clearance sale, start it now and wrap it by mid-August, before fall merchandise arrives.

Your In-Store Advantage Is Real, But Only If You Use It

Retail isn’t going anywhere, store openings are actually outpacing closures right now, and research keeps pointing to the same reason: experience and service. That’s the one thing a national chain can never replicate.

Take this action: Pick one recurring experience, just one, and launch it this month.

Items Per Sale Is Your Profit Protector

Even with fewer transactions, overall sales are holding steady, in part because customers are buying more items per visit when they do come in.

Take this action: Run the “three suggestions” drill at your next team meeting, then remerchandise so the add-on items are already sitting next to your bestsellers.

Read Your Numbers Before You React

When a week feels slow, the instinct is to do something, an unplanned sale, an impulse buy from a vendor at the door, a promotion that chips away at your margin.

Take this action: Before you change a single price or run a single promotion this week, sit down and answer those three questions first.

Your Millie Moment

This week, before you touch pricing, promotions, or inventory:

Fall doesn’t fix a shaky foundation. It amplifies whatever’s already there, for better or worse. The store that goes into November knowing her margins, carrying the right inventory, and backed by a team that knows how to sell, has a completely different holiday season than the one heading in with cash gaps and no plan beyond hope.

💚 Remember: The holiday season cannot fix a shaky foundation. It amplifies whatever’s already there. Get your margins, your clearance sale, and your team’s items-per-sale habit locked in now, while there’s still time to change your results.
