Right now, things are complicated.
That’s not dramatic. That’s just honest. And if you’re a store owner trying to figure out how to show up for your customers, your team, and yourself in the middle of all of it, this one is for you.
I recently sat down with Lauren McKeague, founder of Pink Slip Boutique and Parker James Boutique, two experience-driven retail brands in Illinois known for high-energy events, deep community roots, and shopping experiences people never forget. What started as a single prom dress shop has grown into three thriving boutiques over 18 years. And she said something that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about.
Keep reading. Because this might be exactly what you needed to hear today.
Your Customers Know When You’re Being Real
One of my coaches sent me a post Lauren had written during a hard news cycle. It stopped me in my tracks.
She wasn’t pretending everything was fine. She wasn’t going quiet either. She showed up and told her people exactly why she was still posting pink pictures and party invitations and exclamation marks.
She wrote: “They’re a small act of defiance against heaviness. A way of saying we can still gather, still celebrate, still support each other. We can hold concern and celebration, fear and joy.”
Her community responded with love. No clap back. No controversy. Just connection.
Here’s why that matters for you: Your customers are not just buying products. They are buying into your world. And right now, more than ever, they need to know who you are and why you show up the way you do.
The lesson: You don’t have to take a political stance. You don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to be real. Authenticity is not a marketing strategy. It’s the foundation of a world that lasts.
The World You Build Is Bigger Than Your Store
We talk a lot at RETAILMavens about world building. That you are not just building a business, you are building a world. And the people who live in your world want to feel you in everything you create.
Lauren told me that when she writes to her customers, she sees their faces. She’s not writing to a follower count. She’s writing to people she knows, people who stretched their budget to buy a prom dress, a dress for a job interview, something for a moment they’ll never forget.
That is the whole thing right there.
That is what turns a store into a destination. That is what turns a follower into a community member. That is what turns a business into a world that people keep coming back to not because of what you sell, but because of how you make them feel.
Take this with you: Look at your last five social posts or emails. Do they feel like you? Could someone read them and know exactly who you are and what you stand for? If not, that’s your starting point.
Consistency Is Leadership
Lauren told me she doesn’t walk around feeling like a fearless, authoritative leader every day. She’s an anxious person. She second-guesses herself. She has hard days.
And yet her team trusts her completely.
Why? Because she shows up. Every single day. Consistently.
She said: “I lead with consistency. People know I’m going to be there. And whatever happens, I’m going to come up with something and do the best I can.”
I want you to hear that. Because I know so many of you are waiting to feel ready before you step fully into your CEO role. Waiting to feel confident. Waiting to feel like a leader.
Leadership is not a feeling. It is a decision you make every morning when you walk through that door.
The lesson: Your team does not need you to be perfect. They need you to be present. Show up, be honest, and keep showing up. That is what builds trust. That is what builds a team. That is what builds a world.
Your World Becomes a Soft Place to Land, For Everyone
Lauren said something toward the end of our conversation that I keep coming back to.
She said her stores are her soft place to land. The place where she gets to be a little more open, a little more emotional, a little more herself. And because of that, her customers feel it the moment they walk in.
She built her stores out of a bad experience. She went to prom, had a terrible time buying her dress, and decided that no one else should feel that way. One shot. One moment. And she was going to make sure it felt good.
Eighteen years later, she is still building from that same place.
That is your reminder today. You opened your store for a reason. There is a person you are serving and a moment you are protecting. Don’t lose sight of that, especially right now, when the world feels heavy and complicated and loud.
Your store is a soft place to land. Make sure it feels that way.
Your Millie Moment
This week, write one piece of communication to your customers: an email, a social post, anything completely in your own voice. No filter. No overthinking. Just you, talking to the faces you see when you walk into your store.
Tell them why you show up. Tell them what your store means to you. Let them in.
A world built on authenticity is a world that doesn’t shake easily.
And you are so ready to build it.
