I remember the exact moment I realized I wasn’t lazy. I was stuck.
It was a conversation with my friend and mentor, Karen Luniw. I was in one of those spirals, you know the one. I’d wake up with good intentions, make a to-do list, and then… nothing. The important stuff didn’t get done. So I did what I always do: I blamed myself.
“I’m so undisciplined,” I said. “I should join that 5 a.m. club. I need more willpower. What’s wrong with me?”
And Karen just looked at me and said something that changed everything.
“Your procrastination isn’t a character flaw, Cathy. It’s data. It’s information. It’s showing you exactly where your internal operating system has hit its ceiling.”
I remember sitting with that for a moment. My operating system. Not my willpower. Not my character. My system.
And here’s the thing: once I understood that, everything shifted.
You’re Not Lazy, Your System Has Met Its Limit
Let me be really honest with you. I think most of us who run retail stores are high achievers. We’re people who have gotten to where we are by doing the work, making the calls, staying after hours, thinking about our business when we should be sleeping.
And then we hit this wall.
The wall looks like:
- You know what you should do, but you’re not doing it
- You’re working harder than ever, but things aren’t moving
- You feel stuck, but you can’t articulate why
- You blame yourself, which makes it worse
And here’s what I learned: that wall isn’t a sign that you need to work harder. It’s a sign that your internal operating system has reached its ceiling.
Your internal operating system is the collection of beliefs, patterns, and meanings you’ve accumulated over your whole life. It got you here. It’s served you. But every system has a limit.
And when you hit that limit, no amount of tactics will move you forward. You need to upgrade the system itself.
The Reticular Activating System: Why Your Words Matter More Than You Think
This is the part that actually blew my mind.
Your subconscious mind is processing about 30 billion bits of information per second. Your conscious mind? About 1 million.
So here’s what happens: When you say “I’m a procrastinator,” your subconscious takes that as a command. It literally filters reality to prove you right. It finds evidence everywhere. See? You’re procrastinating again. You’re so undisciplined.
It’s like you’ve told your brain to look for proof that you’re lazy, and your brain is an obedient servant, it delivers.
But here’s the beautiful part: if you change the declaration, your brain changes too.
Instead of “I’m a procrastinator,” what if you said, “I’m someone who hits ceilings and then breaks through them”?
Your reticular activating system would start finding evidence for that instead.
Change the Meaning, Change the Pattern
One of the most powerful moments in my work with Karen Luniw was when we were talking about a conflict I’d had with Paul.
I was mad. I was convinced he’d meant something hurtful. I was making a whole story about it.
Karen asked me one question: “Why are you choosing to give that meaning to that?”
I remember my body actually stopped. I wasn’t expecting to have a choice.
But that’s exactly what we have. We always have a choice about the meaning we attach to things.
The event happened. That’s neutral. But the meaning we give it, that’s where the power is. That’s where the pattern starts.
If you tell yourself, “This slow month means I’m failing,” you’ll feel defeated, and you’ll probably procrastinate on the things that would actually help.
But if you tell yourself, “This slow month is showing me something about my system that I need to see,” you’ll be curious instead of defensive. And curious people take action.
What Percentage of That Feeling Is Actually Yours?
This is a game-changer, and I use it literally every single day.
Karen Luniw taught me that we’re constantly picking up other people’s energy. It’s like an energetic virus. You walk into your store, and your team is stressed. You absorb that stress. Your customers are anxious about money. You absorb that anxiety. Your best friend is going through a hard time. You absorb that sadness.
And then you think it’s your stress. Your anxiety. Your sadness.
But it’s not. It’s just energy you picked up.
So now, when I’m feeling overwhelmed or emotional, I ask myself: “What percentage of this actually belongs to me?”
Most of the time, the answer is surprisingly small. Maybe 20%. Maybe 30%.
And then I say (seriously, I say this out loud): “Return to sender with love and awareness.”
It sounds weird. But it works.
You’d be shocked at how much of what you’re feeling isn’t actually yours. And once you return it, you have so much more energy for the things that are actually your responsibility.
Your Procrastination Is Showing You Something
So here’s what I want you to understand about procrastination.
It’s not laziness. It’s not a character flaw. It’s not proof that you’re undisciplined.
It’s data.
It’s your internal operating system telling you something. And usually, it’s telling you one of three things:
- You’ve hit your ceiling. You’re operating at the edge of what your current beliefs and patterns can hold. The next level requires you to become someone new—and your system hasn’t caught up yet.
- There’s a meaning attached to it. You’ve decided something about this task or this goal, and that meaning is creating resistance. You need to question the meaning, not force yourself through it.
- You don’t actually have what you need. Maybe you don’t have enough information. Maybe you’re waiting for help that hasn’t come. Maybe the task is genuinely boring or difficult, and you need to make it more interesting.
But here’s what I know for sure: blaming yourself doesn’t solve any of these. It just wastes your energy.
This Is What I Did, and How Everything Changed
When I finally understood all this, I did something different.
Instead of pushing harder, I got curious.
I started asking: “What is my procrastination trying to show me?”
And then I stopped thinking about it. I asked the question, and I went do something else. I let the answer come to me instead of trying to force it.
(Karen Luniw calls this “downloading” instead of “conjuring.” When you sit and think hard, you’re just rehashing information you already know. When you ask and step away, you allow new information to come in.)
I started changing some of my internal declarations. I stopped saying “I should be more disciplined” and started saying “I’m building a business that works without me burning out.”
I started paying attention to what energy wasn’t mine, and I started sending it back.
And you know what? Things started moving.
Not because I was working harder. But because I was operating from a different system.
Your Millie Moment: This Week
I want you to do three things this week.
- First, catch yourself. The next time you procrastinate or you catch yourself blaming yourself for something, pause. Don’t fix it yet. Just notice it. That’s your ceiling showing you exactly where it is.
- Second, ask the real question. Instead of “Why am I so lazy?” ask “What is this trying to show me?” Then stop thinking about it. Go do something else. Let the answer come.
- Third, change one declaration. Pick one thing you keep saying about yourself. “I’m not good with money.” “I procrastinate.” “I can’t delegate.” And decide: I’m not saying that anymore.
Notice what happens.
Here’s what I know about you: You’re not stuck because you’re lazy. You’re not stuck because you lack discipline. You’re stuck because your internal operating system has met its ceiling.
And the beautiful part? Once you see where that ceiling is, you can shift it.
The next level doesn’t require doing more. It requires becoming able to hold more.
And that starts with understanding that your procrastination isn’t failure.
It’s data. It’s a message. It’s exactly what you need to see.
