You might have heard the headlines: the Strait of Hormuz is in turmoil following a U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran, causing massive disruptions in global oil traffic. Right now, we’re seeing a 90% drop in shipping through this key route, and the ripple effects are hitting oil markets hard.

You might be thinking, “Cathy… what does this have to do with my store?” And the truth is: a lot more than it seems at first glance.

Oil touches almost everything in our daily lives from transportation and manufacturing to packaging, logistics, and even the raw materials in our products. When prices fluctuate dramatically, the effects move fast through the global economy and eventually, they land in our stores.

Here’s what that might look like for you:

So, should you panic? Absolutely not. But you do need to pay attention and respond thoughtfully. The retailers who thrive during uncertain times aren’t the ones who react with fear, they’re the ones who adjust early, focus on what they can control, and lead with intention.

Here’s what I recommend focusing on right now:

1. Protect Your Cash & Tighten Inventory

Watch your cash flow closely and avoid speculative buying. Focus on bestsellers, “never out of” products, and high-margin items. If something isn’t moving, don’t let it sit, move it quickly. Your inventory should give you agility, not stress.

2. Be Thoughtful With Your Marketing

Now is not the time to compete on price alone. Customers are looking for connection, comfort, and joy. Talk about why your products matter, share your personal experience, or highlight the stories behind the items. Even something as simple as a favorite mug can become meaningful when you describe the warmth, comfort, and experience it brings.

3. Watch Early Signals & Adjust

Keep an eye on supplier pricing, shipping changes, and consumer behavior. Are people trading down? Are your average sales shrinking? Understanding these patterns early allows you to adjust without scrambling.

At the heart of it all, retail has always been shaped by forces beyond our control. But one thing we can control is how well we understand our customers. Retail isn’t about products, it’s about people.

When the world feels uncertain, the retailers who succeed are the ones who stay grounded, lead confidently, and act thoughtfully. That’s exactly what being a Richer Retailer is about: owning your identity, knowing your “why,” and showing up for your team and your customers no matter what’s happening outside your doors.

If I were running my stores right now, I’d focus on my top products, the ones I know sell consistently. I’d make sure they’re fully stocked, protected, and being promoted to my customers. That small, intentional focus will go a long way toward stability in uncertain times.

💚 Remember: The goal isn’t to build a retail business that only works when the world is calm. The goal is to build one that works even when it isn’t. You’ve got this, friends. Keep showing up. Keep leading. Keep loving your customers. That’s how we thrive no matter what the headlines say.
