I was on the floor of my kids’ store. A woman walked in. My employee froze.
She walked past, polite smile, and said: “No thanks, I’m just looking.”
My team did what we’re trained to do: “Okay, great. My name’s Kathy. I’ll be right over here.”
Customer wandered ten minutes. Left. Never said another word.

That’s when I realized: we’re doing this wrong. And we don’t even know it.
338,000 people watched my YouTube video on this. The pushback came hard. Store owners: “My team freezes at the door.” Customers: “I feel watched the second I walk in.”
But here’s what got me: everyone felt something. That first 30 seconds mattered.
The way you greet a customer determines whether they buy, come back, or leave and tell everyone about it.
The Phrases That Kill the Sale
Most retailers use the same tired lines:
“How can I help you today?” “Let me know if you need anything.” “Have you been in here before?”
The second those words hit the air, the customer’s brain makes a decision: “This person is a salesperson.”
Guard goes up. Defensive mode on. They’re preparing to be sold to before you’ve even tried.
I thought the words didn’t matter. I was wrong.
The words are the thing. When you ask “How can I help you today?” their brain translates it as: “I’m here to get something from you.”
Tense, defensive people don’t buy.
And they don’t have a good experience either.
You’re Leaving Money on the Table Every Single Day
Two-thirds of Gen Z prefer shopping in-store. They’re choosing you over scrolling.
But they’re walking into either:
Option A: Employees with blank stares. Silent. Scrolling. (The “Gen Z gaze.” Yes, it’s a thing.)
Option B: Employees pouncing the second they walk in. “Can I help you find something?”
Both fail the customer.
There is a science to this. It’s neuroscience. When you greet them right, you trigger dopamine. They feel seen. They relax. They open up.
That’s not a transaction. That’s a relationship.
The Three Moves
Move One: Acknowledge Them
“Hey, how are ya?”
That’s it. Make them feel seen. That’s your only job in that moment.
Move Two: Give Them Space
Don’t pounce. Let them breathe. Walk around. Acclimate.
Then, stay nearby. Do real work. Actually straighten things. Actually clean. Not fake hovering.
Move Three: Start a Real Conversation
Forget the sale. Just talk.
Monday/Tuesday: “Did you do anything fun over the weekend?”
Thursday/Friday: “What are you doing this weekend?”
Seasonal: “Catching those fall leaves?”
Compliments: Only if genuine.
The point: When there’s no pressure on you, there’s no pressure on them. That’s when they relax.
The Magic Question
“So what brings you into the store today?”
But timing is everything.
NOT: “Hey, how are ya? So what brings you in?” That’s aggressive.
YES: After you’ve chatted. After they feel safe. When the conversation naturally winds down a little.
When you ask it at the right moment, they tell you everything. “Oh, I’m here for a baby gift.” “I’m looking for something for my patio.”
They’ve told you exactly what they want. And it feels natural.
One patio furniture store hit 100% conversion rate using this correctly. Because people start telling stories. About their house. What they need.
That’s the power of this question.
The Pushback I Got (And Why It Matters)
338,000 views. Hard pushback. But it was valuable pushback.
Objection #1: “I Just Want to Be Left Alone”
Valid. Honor it.
If someone signals they don’t want to chat, listen. Stay warm. Stay nearby. Don’t push. They might ask you a question when the pressure’s off.
Objection #2: “Straightening Feels Like You’re Watching Me”
You’re right. If it’s fake, it IS creepy.
The trick: actually straighten. Pull tags. Check sizes. Wipe shelves. Do real work.
When you’re genuinely working, customers don’t think twice about your presence.
Objection #3: “This Feels Like Fake Small Talk”
Because people have done it badly.
Best Buy employee scanning items without looking up: “What are your plans this weekend?” That’s a script.
What I’m teaching is the opposite. It’s genuine curiosity.
Everyone knows the difference between real and fake. And they feel it immediately.
Your Millie Moment: This Week, Get Off the Script
This isn’t complicated. But it requires practice.
Here’s what I want you to do this week:
First: Pick one phrase and kill it.
“How can I help you today?” “If you need anything, I’m right here.” “Have you been here before?” Pick one. Delete it permanently. Starting today.
Second: Teach your team the three feelings.
Customers need to feel seen. Acknowledge them immediately.
Customers need to feel safe. Give them a moment. Don’t pounce.
Customers need a specific conversation. Open-ended questions. Genuine curiosity.
Then, when the time is right: “So what brings you into the store today?”
Say it out loud right now if you have to. Get it in your body.
Third: Practice the hardest moment.
Your team member freezes when someone says, “I’m just looking.”
That’s your practice scenario. Do it with your team. Yes, it’ll be awkward. But every awkward practice run reduces awkward moments with real customers. You’re not practicing on your customers. You’re practicing with each other.
Fourth: Share this with everyone.
Send the episode. Send this article. Share it with your whole team before your next shift.
That First 30 Seconds
It determines if they buy. If they come back. If they tell their friends.
Or if they leave and never return.
That’s not an exaggeration. That’s what’s happening in your store right now.
You’re ready to be different. To understand that you’re not a salesperson. You’re a person.
Treat them like a friend.
That $45 customer becomes a $540 customer.
