How Small Stores Win with Focus, Connection, and Authenticity | State of Retail: November 2025

Cathy Wagner standing confidently with arms open, smiling under the text “How Small Stores Win with Focus, Connection, and Authenticity” State of Retail: November 2025.

Can you even believe it’s November already? This is the month where all that planning meets reality when the energy shifts, the music starts playing in small stores, and you can feel the holidays coming to life.

But if you’re feeling a little uncertain or even overwhelmed, I get it. Retail can feel like a rollercoaster especially this time of year. There’s always pressure to do more: post more, sell more, plan more. But here’s what I’ve learned (and what I want you to hold onto this month): clarity is your best advantage.

Clarity is focus. And focus always wins. 💚

Smarter Spending Is the New Normal

When I look at this month’s retail data and what we’re seeing with our clients, one thing stands out clearly: shoppers aren’t spending wildly, but they are spending thoughtfully especially in small stores.

People are prioritizing value not just discounts, but meaning, connection, and emotion. Millennials, for instance, are still splurging, but in a more intentional way on experiences, memories, or something that feels sentimental, something small stores do best.

So your job? Curate with intention. Think everyday value meets emotional connection.

When you tell the story behind your products, when you show what they mean, that’s when people connect. You’re not just selling things; you’re helping them create moments. Like when families gather around a new board game after Thanksgiving dinner, that’s the memory they’re really buying.

Experience Still Wins (and Converts)

Here’s the other big trend this November: experience is everything.

Customers crave connection, inspiration, and a reason to come in. And that’s where small stores shine.

You don’t need a giant sale to make an impact. Instead, create a moment, a feeling. Maybe it’s a “Holiday Cocktails & Hostess Gifts” night, or a Saturday morning with coffee and donuts. Invite a few loyal customers, maybe teachers, nurses, or local leaders and let them bring their friends.

Those small touches? They build community. They turn casual shoppers into lifelong fans.

And if your space allows, think about combining experiences like a boutique with a coffee bar, or a bookshop with plants. That sense of connection is what people crave more than ever.

AI as Your Secret Team Member

Let’s talk about your not-so-secret helper this season: AI.

I know many of you are already using tools like ChatGPT to summarize vendor emails, write captions, or draft newsletters and that’s great! AI isn’t replacing your voice; it’s helping you protect your time.

Use it to take care of the busywork so you can stay focused on the creative, personal parts of your business. Write faster thank-you notes, event recaps, or even customer follow-ups with a little AI help and watch how much more space opens up for your brilliance to shine.

It’s not about perfection, it’s about momentum.

Authenticity Over Perfection

If there’s one thing that stands out this year, it’s this: authenticity matters more than perfection.

Your customers want you. They want to hear your voice, see your face, and feel your heart behind what you do. Don’t be afraid to show the behind-the-scenes moments, the imperfections, the realness because that’s what builds community.

That’s what makes your store stand out from every other one up and down the street and from the big boxes too.

Your Millie Moment: Focus Beats Frenzy

Here’s your Millie Moment for November and it’s one I want you to carry with you all season:

Focus beats frenzy.

The most successful small stores aren’t chasing every idea they’re doing what matters most. They’re doubling down on their top sellers and their best customers. They’re curating their time and energy just like they curate their product mix.

Your time and energy are luxury items, protect them.

So this week, I challenge you to pick one area to simplify. Maybe it’s your marketing, your floor layout, or your event calendar. Then ask yourself:

Does this serve my best customers and my bottom line? If not, let it go.
