#001: It’s Me. Hi – My Journey to Retail Success

I wasn’t even meant to be in retail. I was an accidental retailer, and retail success did not come easily.

My journey from sleepless nights and near-bankruptcy to retail success inspired me to create Retail Mavens. Now, I’m here to share my story, the lessons I learned, and strategies to help you become a Richer Retailer not just financially, but in time, freedom, and relationships.

How I Became an Accidental Retailer

It all started unexpectedly. A fellow parent invited me to work at his kids’ store, and even though I had no retail experience, I gave it a try. And I loved it! I enjoyed helping customers find the perfect gifts and become rockstar gift-givers.

Before long, I was full of ideas to improve the store. But when I suggested them, the owner shot me down. “If you have so many ideas, maybe you should start your own store?” So I did! With a small inheritance as collateral, my sister and I launched Duck, Duck, Goose, a kids’ boutique. It went so well that we quickly opened a second location – because everything seemed so easy!

Until it wasn’t.

The Moment Everything Changed

As the economy shifted, and this new location, with different customers, my old strategies stopped working. Suddenly, I was struggling to make payroll, pay rent and manage inventory.

I spent sleepless nights worrying about our future.

One day, I turned to my uncle for a loan to keep things afloat. After reviewing my numbers, he said, “You’ve got money coming in the front door and more going out the back. There’s nothing left for you. I’m sorry, but until you start making some changes, I can’t help.”

I knew I needed help, so I hired a retail coach, and it changed everything. He helped me understand critical concepts I had been missing, like:

  • The importance of inventory management
  • Aligning cash flow with business goals
  • Leading a team with purpose and clarity

I slowly turned things around. It wasn’t overnight, but we grew from one store to three, generating millions in revenue. The vision of retail success began to come into focus, piece by piece.

Discovering My True Mission

While running my stores was rewarding, I soon discovered my true passion: helping other retailers succeed. I couldn’t stop sharing what I had learned.

That’s why I founded RETAILMavens to help independent retailers, especially women, build businesses that support their lives, families, and communities.
