You don’t have to know it all. You just need to know who to ask and to have more sales.
If you’ve ever found yourself staring at a spreadsheet or stuck in the weeds of retail decisions thinking, “I have no idea what I’m doing,” you’re not alone. And guess what? That’s not a weakness. That’s actually the beginning of something powerful.
In this week’s episode of The Richer Retailer, I sat down with Dominick Miserandino, a retail media maven whose journey took him from publishing to mentoring retailers during COVID, to now running Retail Tech Media Nexus – a company that literally connects the dots between tech, media, and retail.
Our conversation? Eye-opening. Energizing. And so real.

Let’s Talk Growth (Real Growth)
Here’s the thing: Retailers who ask better questions make more sales. That’s not just a catchy line, it’s the core of what I see every day with retailers who thrive. It’s not about having the most knowledge or the fanciest strategy. It’s about being willing to ask:
- Why aren’t customers buying this?
- What do they actually want?
- Who can help me figure it out?
The willingness to ask is the secret.
It’s Okay Not to Know
Dominick said something that hit me right in the gut
“The best leaders don’t know everything, they just know who to ask.”
I built my business by asking the right questions, not pretending I had all the answers.
Because let’s be honest, what stops us from growing is usually the fear of not knowing. But guess what? That discomfort? That’s where the magic happens.
Your Customers Are Talking, Are You Listening?
Here’s your reminder: your community is your best data source. Not analytics. Not AI. People.
Talk to them. Call them. Ask questions.
- Why did they buy?
- Why didn’t they?
- What would they love to see?
Even a quick birthday call. A check-in. A thank-you. It builds something algorithms never could: trust. And yes, it leads to more sales.

Experience > New Stock
We also dove into experiential retail. Dominick told me about local restaurants hosting Taylor Swift nights or running events based on trending news. That’s the stuff that draws people in. And as I always say, your community wants to support you, they just need a reason.
Want to really stand out? Stop relying on “new arrivals” to drive sales. Start creating moments.
Think:
- Themed nights
- Local events
- In-store surprises
- Zoom-style online experiences
You can’t just post a picture of your new water bottle and expect it to fly off the shelf. You need to give people a moment. An experience. A reason to care. And no, it doesn’t have to be huge. It can be a trolley ride, a bracelet-making event, or simply knowing your customer’s name.
You Millie Moment
The retailers who are winning today are the ones who:
- Get curious
- Ask better questions
- Take intentional action
Don’t overcomplicate it. Start by asking:
“What’s one question I can ask today that will move my business forward?”
Because retailers who ask better questions make more sales. Every time.
